The face to face arrangement is more complicated to use correctly and is less popular than the back to back layout. Its main advantage is that the axial clearance in the bearing will decrease as it heats. It is more prone to overheating without control of heat flow. Still, it is an excellent choice in equipment that requires tight positioning control, provided the operating temperature and heat flow are stabilized.
