Sealed units are protected from liquids, vapors, and fine dust, have excellent grease retention but have increased friction compared to shielded and open bearings. Silicon Nitride has a good combination of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. It is extremely hard and has exceptional thermal shock, impact resistance, and high-temperature capabilities, with high creep, oxidation, and wear resistance but is exceptionally light in weight. Its low thermal and electrical conductivity is especially useful in applications where corrosion, electric or magnetic fields prohibit the use of metals. It is an excellent choice when high-temperature and high-load abilities are needed. However, it has a very low rate of thermal expansion that must be accommodated to prevent excessive tensile stress on the inner race.
